D'Youville Names 2012 Marguerite D'Youville Scholarship Winners

Buffalo, New York – November 16, 2012 – D'Youville College honored two undergraduate students - who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to volunteer service - with the 2012 Marguerite D'Youville Scholarship.

The annual scholarship recognizes undergraduate students who have shown a commitment to service to others in the spirit of Saint Marie-Marguerite d'Youville.

"The amount and level of service that our students provide is truly inspiring and provides a most hopeful picture for the future," said Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Robert P. Murphy. "Congratulations to both of our winners and thanks to all who applied for this award."

The winners of the 2012 Marguerite D'Youville Scholarship are:

Emily Cheung

Emily Cheung, of Mississauga, Ontario, is a senior nursing student with a 3.16 cumulative average, who has shown an ongoing commitment to service both at home in Canada and at D'Youville. Her volunteer service dates back to high school and includes working with and feeding the homeless in the Toronto area, serving as a retreat facilitator for mentally and physically handicapped students at her church and tapping friends in the Canadian medical community for medical supplies to assist nursing faculty with the annual medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

On campus, Emily has worked as an orientation assistant (OA) for 3 years, and was the lead OA this past summer. She has been a teaching assistant for Freshman Focus classes, volunteered time with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and has managed volunteer activities for the Student Nurses Association in her role as Chief of Operations.

Stephanie Wiechec

Stephanie Wiechec, of North Tonawanda NY, is a senior occupational therapy student with a 3.04 cumulative average. In her application for the award Stephanie wrote, "the beliefs and values of St. Marguerite D'Youville were part of the reason I chose to attend D'Youville and part of the reason for my career choice....and my whole life I have wanted to incorporate service into my daily routine."

Stephanie's extensive volunteer service includes, Friends of the Night People, Brush Up Buffalo, SABAH, Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper, Crisis Services and the Rotary Club of Buffalo. She is active in her church, proving leadership to the youth of the congregation and frequently participates in charity walks.
