Nursing students work in a practice lab.

Explore pre-nursing courses and earn credit towards your nursing degree as a freshman before transferring into the program with our specialized pre-nursing sequence.

Overview & Distinctions

Pre-nursing is designed for students who may not meet the admissions requirements for direct entry into D’Youville’s nursing program but have the potential to be successful in the major. Students who are admitted into this specialized pathway and successfully complete the prerequisite courses will be eligible to transfer into the nursing program at the start of their sophomore year.

To remain on-track to earn a bachelor's in nursing in four years, students following this specialized sequence must successfully complete a total of 8 predetermined credits the summer between their freshman and sophomore years. Students taking summer courses will receive a pre-nursing scholarship to cover the cost of tuition!

The benefits of this track include:
  • Regular one-on-one advisement with an advisor who will check in throughout the semester to track progress,
  • Support in identifying individualized academic trouble spots,
  • A modified chemistry curriculum that breaks chemistry requirements down into separate semesters for a better grasp of the material,
  • Assurance into the nursing program provided all requirements are met,
  • 8 free predetermined credits during the summer.

Nursing at D'Youville

D'Youville's Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing

Established in 1942, D'Youville's nursing program has an excellent reputation as one of the best in the region for high-quality, student-centered education. Once enrolled as a nursing student, you'll benefit from faculty who are clinical experts in their fields and recognized for their student-centered approach.

Established Partnerships and Learning Locations

Once admitted to nursing program, experience early access to a wide range of clinical settings at sites such as Buffalo General Hospital, VA of WNY, Buffalo Psychiatric center, Horizon Health, John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital and Best Self Behavioral Health.

Hands-on, Cross-Departmental Learning

Our students spend more time in the clinical setting than in most other programs and enjoy higher job placement rates because of it. Before graduation, undergraduate nursing students also have an opportunity to participate in our Interprofessional Education and Simulation Center — a unique simulation experience which uses trained medical actors to teach students that when healthcare professionals collaborate across specialties, patient outcomes improve.

Fully-Prepared, Career-Ready Graduates

Did you know that all registered nurses in New York State must obtain a BSN within ten years of initial licensure? Our program prepares our students for a competitive job market, a changing landscape in healthcare, and to deliver holistic, quality care to all patients.

Interprofessional Education at D'Youville

Learn with other majors and across disciplines to improve patient outcomes in D'Youville's  Interprofessional Education and Simulation Center, a research and academic project that uses professional actors to create real-life patient care simulations for students.
