The Importance of Community Service

Do you remember waving your hand enthusiastically showing your willingness to help? That hand raising gesture so early on in your life demonstrated a willingness to volunteer. Here are some of the reasons why volunteering is so important to you and others:

  • To help someone
  • To improve the community
  • To move from your comfort zone
  • To build new relationships
  • To enhance your resume and establish community connections

Haitian Relief Efforts

The D’Youville community has responded to the cries of help from Haiti with compassion and generosity.  Thus far,  $3,734.68  has been raised and donated to Catholic Relief Services, Doctors Without Borders, the American Red Cross and two Haitian families with connections to D’Youville College. There have been several fundraising efforts:

  • the Dessert Gallery coordinated by the Learning Center,
  • Sunday Mass offering;
  • Sociology Club and Student Nursing Association bake sales;
  • the Physician Assistant’s dance sponsored by the PAs and the PA dept,
  • a Extreme BINGO sponsored by the International Student Organization,
  • A conversation with Winnie Romerill from the American Red Cross sponsored by the Student Physical Therapy Association and Conversations in Liberal Arts.

Campus Ministry has also received individual contributions for Haitian Relief.  Campus Ministry will continue to accept individual donations to Haitian Relief.   Checks can be made out to D’Youville College-Haitian Relief.
