The Importance of Community Service
Do you remember waving your hand enthusiastically showing your willingness to help? That hand raising gesture so early on in your life demonstrated a willingness to volunteer. Here are some of the reasons why volunteering is so important to you and others:
- To help someone
- To improve the community
- To move from your comfort zone
- To build new relationships
- To enhance your resume and establish community connections
Current Opportunities
Habitat for Humanity
We have three Habitat dates during the fall semester: October 18, October 25 and November 15th. We will gather in the College Center parking lot at 8:30am and go to the Habitat location. We will return to campus by 12:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering on a Saturday, please contact Rev. Jan at 829-7693 or via email at mahle@dyc.edu.
Friends of the Night People
The second Wednesday of every month provides an opportunity for our D’Youville community to serve a meal at Friends of the Night People. We meet at Campus Ministry at 4:15 PM and return to campus by 7:30 PM. If you are interested in being part of a crew for a particular month, please contact Rev. Jan Mahle at 829-7693 or via email at mahle@dyc.edu.
Children's Hospital Neonatal ICU
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Children’s Hospital needs volunteers to help make scrapbooks for the families of critically ill children. This is a very traumatic time in the life of the child and family and often there is little help in documenting these precious moments of the child’s life. Volunteers would take pictures and make scrapbooks and photo albums with the families. The hospital will provide supplies but needs dedicated volunteers for this ongoing project. With Children’s Hospital so close to campus, this opportunity is ideal for community service and volunteer hours. Please email afrance@kaleidahealth.org for more information about this project and to volunteer.
For more information or to volunteer for any of these opportunities, please contact the Campus Ministry Office in ALT 319 at 829-7693.
