D’Youville Receives $2.25 Million Federal Grant

Strengthening Institutions grant will aid success and retention of low-income students

Buffalo, New York – October 22, 2020 – Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced today that D’Youville has been awarded a five-year, $2.25 million federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions program.

The grant will focus on building programs and support systems to help low-income students at D’Youville remain and be successful in college until graduation.

“D’Youville serves a diverse student population producing graduates in high-demand fields,” says Congressman Higgins.  “This significant federal award provides the resources that allow for a comprehensive approach to student retention and success.”

D’Youville will use the funds to expand upon a number of programs recently launched by the university which have shown great benefit to retention and graduation rates.

“We have spent the past several years creating the educational ecosystems to support students through their journey, including revamping our general education curriculum and launching a new First-Year Experience, Student Success Center, and Advocacy Center,” says D’Youville President Lorrie Clemo, PhD. “These support systems have resulted in increased retention and graduation rates, at least until COVID-19 threw a monkey wrench into everyone’s plans.”

Clemo says the federal grant could not have come at a better time, as D’Youville grapples with the challenges many higher education institutions have faced due to the pandemic.

“This grant will serve as a springboard for our next phase of building support systems and programs which will allow us to significantly exceed national standards in graduation and retention of low-income students,” she says.

The new programs planned to utilize the federal grant funds include adopting predictive analytics for data-informed retention interventions, hiring a Student Success Navigator, creation of a student engagement mobile app, and professional development for faculty and staff.

“We are committed to helping first-generation college students and all those who face financial challenges to thrive at D’Youville and to find sustainable, lucrative careers upon graduation,” Clemo says. “We’ve been named one of the best universities in the country for social mobility by U.S. News and World Report for two years in a row, and this generous federal grant will help ensure we remain so.”
