Four Accounting Students Honored at Education Dinner

Four Accounting Students Honored at Education Dinner

Four D’Youville Accounting students were honored for their academic accomplishments at the annual New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), Buffalo Chapter Education Night Dinner. The event, which was held on April 23 at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens, honors outstanding junior, senior, and graduate accounting students at Western New York colleges and universities. More than 400 CPAs, professors, students, and guests attended the event. 

“We are extremely proud of our outstanding students who contribute to the community and excel in the classroom,” said Joseph Kabacinski, CPA, CGMA, assistant professor of business and accounting. “They live the mission of D’Youville in their everyday lives. Our honorees will be fine additions to the accounting profession." 

Brett Dlugosz ‘20, accounting major, received a NYSSCPA John T. Kennedy Memorial Award for overall academic excellence honoring a junior majoring in accounting. Dlugosz has the highest grade point average (GPA) of all junior accounting majors at D’Youville. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 5 years with the occupational specialty of air traffic controller. After separating from the military, Dlugosz began his accounting studies at D'Youville in 2017. He is an active member of the D’Youville Student Veterans Association, including serving as vice president in 2018. 

Gary Hamilton ‘19, accounting major, received a NYSSCPA Senior Student Award of Honor for outstanding achievement in accounting studies. He has the highest GPA in accounting coursework for a senior graduating in the 4-year bachelor’s accounting program at D’Youville. He will be completing an accounting internship this summer and is currently considering several opportunities. He is a US Navy veteran. He discovered his passion for accounting after taking an introductory accounting course. Prior to returning to college, Hamilton ran his own property management business.  

Susan Phelps ‘19, accounting major, received a NYSSCPA Senior Student Award of Honor for outstanding achievement in accounting studies. She has the highest GPA in accounting coursework for a senior in the 5-year BS/MS combined program at D’Youville. She served as an active member of the US Army for 8 years. Phelps completed an accounting internship at Big Ditch Brewery and is working in their accounting department part-time while attending D’Youville and is a member of the Student Management Association. 

Hoa Nguyen ‘19, accounting and international business major, received a NYSSCPA Graduate Student Award of Honor for outstanding achievement in accounting studies. Nguyen is in the 5-year program leading to a dual bachelor’s and master’s degree. She has the highest GPA in accounting coursework for a graduate student in the 5-year BS/MS combined program at D’Youville. She was the former president of the Student Management Association at D'Youville. She has also completed various internships and has studied abroad in London, England. Nguyen will be working at GEICO after she graduates in the spring.
