Chinese Faculty Experience D’Youville Through New Partnership

Buffalo, New York - March 23, 2018 - Thanks to a partnership with Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (GXUCM), D’Youville will be the temporary home to 22 faculty members throughout this semester. The GXUCM faculty members are on campus from February 11 to May 11 to take part in the Global Faculty Professional Institute (GFPI) offered through the Center for Global Engagement.

The GFPI allows faculty members to experience American higher education and explore college teaching methods through an immersion experience at D’Youville. Part of the program allows the faculty members to observe two classes of their choice as well as take part in Intensive English Language instruction.

Each Thursday, professional development opportunities are offered through the Institute for Teaching Innovation and other campus experts, covering topics such as Western pedagogical models, information literacy, intellectual property, educational technologies and student engagement. The instructional techniques that the faculty members develop at D’Youville will then be incorporated in their classes at their home institution.

The experience isn’t all business though, GXUCM faculty members get to experience US traditions including a Thanksgiving dinner and will sightsee around Buffalo to see all it has to offer. Trips include an ‘Exploring Buffalo’ tour, the Buffalo Science Museum, a show at the Kavinoky Theatre and a ride on the Maid of the Mist.

Faculty members participating in the Global Faculty Professional Institute will demonstrate traditional Chinese medicine techniques on Tuesday, April 24 at 1:00 PM in the Blue Lounge. Presentations will include traditional food therapy, moxibustion and even tasting foods used for healing.

The partnership with GXUCM also includes a joint bachelor’s degree in nursing. Students will start with three years of instruction in China, followed by two additional years at D’Youville. Upon completion the students will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from D’Youville. The first cohort of students will be on campus for the fall 2018 semester.

Located in Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the south of China, Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine (GXUCM) is a higher educational institute that focuses on Traditional Chinese Medicine.
