D’Youville Professor Takes To The Ice For 11 Day Power Play
Fundraiser for Roswell Park Cancer Institute
Buffalo, New York – June 20, 2017 – Andrew “Drew” Case, clinical assistant professor in the D’Youville College Physician Assistant Department, will take to the ice to show off his hockey skills for The 11 Day Power Play. The event – to be held from June 22 to July 3 – will raise critically needed cancer research funds for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and help in their fight to find a cure for cancer.
The 11-day, continuous hockey game will be held at Buffalo’s HarborCenter where 40 fearless players will spend more than 250 hours on the ice.
“It will be an unfathomable, fierce fight, yet it’s nothing compared to the battle cancer patients face each day,” the event organizers Mike and Amy Lesakowski said.
The Lesakowskis share a deep love of family, a passion for hockey, and a personal experience with cancer. Amy is a cancer survivor and Mike’s mother, Evelyn, passed away from cancer in May 2016 at age 62.
The event hopes to raise $1,000,000 for Roswell Park.
The 40 players will be required to eat, sleep, and breathe hockey, literally living at the HarborCenter for the 11 days.
Case himself was treated at Roswell Park and received “great care” for a thyroid tumor. Cancer took precious loved ones from his family; he lost two dads to cancer. He says, “This event is the least I can do.”
Case, alone, has raised close to $30,000 towards the $1 million goal and is extremely grateful for the support he has received from the D’Youville community.
The title for the world’s longest hockey game is currently held by Dr. Brent Saik and Friends in Saiker’s Acres, Alberta, Canada. They played for 250 hours, 3 minutes, and 20 seconds between February 6 and 16, 2016.
Case and his ice comrades have to get to 11 days in order the break the world record and will start their journey when the puck drops this Thursday, June 22 at 9:00 PM at the HarborCenter.
To help Andrew and his fight, donations can be made through his donation profile on the Roswell Park site.
Case is trying to get to $30,000 in his fundraising efforts and is very close to achieving his goal– please donate to get him get there.
