Program Helps High School Students with College Financial Aid Applications

Buffalo, New York – October 04, 2016 – D’Youville College received a $10,500 grant from the First Niagara Foundation in support of a federal student aid completion project that assists city high school students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The grant builds on earlier federal funding from the Higher Education Services Corporation which has funded the program since 2014.

D’Youville’s program focuses on students attending public and charter schools in the City of Buffalo with an emphasis on promoting college financial and preparation literacy.

“This program has helped hundreds of local students and their families complete this critical, but intimidating form, which serves as the make or break financial access point for enrolling in college,” said Antwan K. Barlow, director of the Upward Bound Program at D’Youville and administrator of the grant. “It helps remove one of the toughest barriers to post-secondary education in this community.”

“First Niagara is committed to initiatives that empower our young people and provide them with the resources they need to succeed and achieve their goals,” said Elizabeth Gurney, executive director of the First Niagara Foundation. “Our support of this program reflects our deep commitment to connecting more students to opportunities that will help them reach their full potential and strengthen our community.”
