To Conduct Anthropometric Measurements of NHL Hockey Prospects on June 1
Buffalo, New York – May 26, 2016 –The D’Youville College Department of Exercise and Sports Studies (ESS) will participate in the National Hockey League Scouting Combine to be held in Buffalo at the First Niagara Center May 29 through June 4, 2016.
The NHL Combine is a showcase event for the League where approximately 120 of the world’s best young hockey prospects eligible for the NHL draft convene to showcase their skills, talents and athleticism. The draft will be held June 24-25 at the Center.
Much of the NHL Combine will take place at First Niagara Center and HarborCenter as well as Buffalo General Hospital where prospects will have approximately 75 anthropometric (human body measurements) done, cardiovascular screening , as well as orthopedic and musculoskeletal exams completed, according to Dr. James Velasquez, Director of the Exercise and Sports Studies at D’Youville.
The college department along with Patrick Roward, an exercise physiologist with Kaleida Health who is leading and organizing the effort, will make up the anthropometric team along with 15 ESS upper-class students and faculty members. They include Matt Hamilton, a clinical assistant professor, Thomas McCarthy, assistant professor, and Dr. Velasquez. All will be participating on June 1 completing all body measurements. “These include skinfold caliper body composition, goniometric measurement for movement and flexibility, muscular strength and force testing, as well as a variety of girth and limb length measurements,” Velasquez said.
“In order to ensure students were properly prepared and comfortable completing these tasks, the D’Youville ESS faculty held numerous student training sessions in May. “Student involvement and enthusiasm for this event has been outstanding and we are confident they will perform exceptionally,” he said.
