Bauers Lend Their Name to Landmark Facility
Buffalo, New York – March 06, 2016 – Two of D’Youville’s most loyal donors, Dr. Charles Bauer and his wife, Mary Schweitzer Bauer ’47, made a leadership gift supporting construction of the College’s new academic building. In honor of their gift, the facility now bears their name: The Dr. Charles and Mary Schweitzer Bauer School of Arts, Sciences and Education.
A centerpiece of the College’s planning, the new facility provides state-of-the-art laboratory, classroom, and office space for disciplines ranging from chemistry and computer science to the fine arts.
Explaining their support of the College, Mrs. Bauer said, “We have been fortunate to be successful in life, and we want to share that success. Most important, we want to do so now, so that we can see the result.”
Recalling her days as a nursing student starting in 1943, Mrs. Bauer described a far different D’Youville. “We had one building then,” she said. “To get a Coke, we’d go down the street to the ‘pharm.’” Despite the modest setting, the education, she remembered, was an inspiring one. “The nuns were excellent teachers, and very kind to us. And the nursing program was quite strong.”
Over the years, the Bauer’s have supported a range of causes at D’Youville, but none more exciting than the new building. “Being part of this project, and now seeing it become a reality, is tremendously rewarding," said Dr. Bauer.
Editor's Note: Sadly, both of our good friends, Dr. Charles Bauer and Mary Schweitzer Bauer are now deceased. Their names live on in the magnificent academic building on the corner of Niagara and Jersey Streets that bears their names. While the D'Youville College community mourns their loss, we will be forever grateful for their generosity.
