Catholic Relief Services President to deliver DYC Commencement Speech
Dr. Carolyn Y. Woo leads one of the world’s largest and most respected international relief and development agencies.
Buffalo, New York – December 16, 2015 – Dr. Carolyn Y. Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), will be the commencement speaker at D’Youville’s 108th annual commencement on May 21, 2016.
Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. Founded in 1943 by Catholic bishops to serve survivors of World War II in Europe, the nonprofit is based in Baltimore.
Today, CRS is one of the world’s largest and most respected international relief and development agencies, reaching more 85 million people in 101 countries on five continents. Their mission is to "assist impoverished and disadvantaged people overseas, working in the spirit of Catholic social teaching to promote the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person."
Dr. Woo assumed the position of President & CEO of CRS in January 2012. She served as dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, one of the nation’s leading business school in ethics education and research prior to accepting her current position.
A native of Hong Kong, she was educated by the Maryknoll Sisters and came to the U.S. to attend Purdue University where she received her B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. She became a faculty member and was named one of 40 Young Leaders of American Academe by Change magazine.
Dr. Woo served on the Board of CRS and currently sits on a number of boards including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
She is the author of "Working for a Better World," published in 2015.
