DYC Celebrates Opening of Athletic Field with Ribbon-Cutting
The Sept 27 event includes food trucks and speakers from the college
Buffalo, New York – September 24, 2014 – D'Youville College will officially open the new outdoor athletic fields with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
Located at the foot of Porter Avenue, near the entrance to the I-190 north expressway and on the former site of the popular Ted’s Hot Stand, the $5.5 million sport field will be the home of the college’s women’s softball and soccer teams as well as men’s soccer and a future women’s lacrosse team.
The field, a short walk from the D’Youville campus, is D'Youville's first-ever outdoor athletic fields and are NCAA Division III regulation size for both soccer and lacrosse and featuring a state of the art softball diamond.
It is surrounded by seven light poles varying in height from 60 to 90 feet with a total of 87 fifteen hundred watt light fixtures. The field is adjacent to the I-190 expressway. Protective netting 20 to 60 feet, in height, and higher in other areas, is around the perimeter of the field.
Artificial turf, installed by A-Turf of Buffalo, covers the entire field allowing play in any weather conditions. It is the same turf used in the majority of professional sports venues.
“Our new outdoor facility is a tremendous boost for our student-athletes,” says Brian Cavanaugh, D’Youville’s Athletic Director.“To have a state of the art facility with artificial turf, lights and close to our campus solidifies D’Youville athletics in NCAA III college competition. This facility is amazing and will add to the student-athletic welfare as well as providing for dormitory students who will use it for recreation and intramurals. Our coaches are excited about providing camps and clinics for local West Side children.“
Approximately 100 spectators can be accommodated on permanent grandstand style bleachers for softball. There are several areas outside the field fencing for individuals to watch the games.
A new athletic service building directly across from the field has four locker rooms and showers for both home and visiting teams.
There are two state-of-the art Outdoor Multisport LED scoreboards for timing and scoring soccer and lacrosse featuring wireless controllers, receivers and transmitter. There is a separate softball scoreboard.
“We are so pleased that the field is near the college and located among the other recreational parks and Olmstead treasures which are a part of the beautiful West Side of Buffalo,” said Sister Denise A. Roche, GNSH, president of D’Youville.
The college is developing plans to contract with local schools’ and community soccer, lacrosse and women’s softball teams to rent the facility for games.
The general contractor for the project was Savarino Companies and all local companies were used in the field construction, according to the college.
THE D’YOUVILLE COLLEGE COMMUNITY IS INVITED TO ATTEND.
FOOD TRUCKS WILL BE LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE FIELD.
