DYC to Dedicate Bell & Plaque Honoring St. Mary's On-the-Hill
Buffalo, New York – June 23, 2014 – D’Youville College will hold a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. to dedicate the original bell that hung in the tower of St. Mary’s–on-the-Hill Episcopal Church on Buffalo’s West Side.
The dedication ceremony will be held at the former church site, at the northeast corner of Niagara and Vermont streets, directly behind the Connecticut Street Armory. The bell and a commemorative 30” x 30” plaque will be unveiled at the ceremony.
The church, constructed in the late 19th-century, fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2011. D’Youville College purchased the property and constructed a student and staff parking lot on the site.
The bell was incorporated into the design of the parking lot based on feedback from neighborhood residents. Architect Robert Kasprzak designed a display memorial for the bell and plaque.
At Wednesday's ceremony, Tom Schobert, an historical re-enactor, will portray William Fargo, who served as mayor of Buffalo from 1862-1865. Fargo was a co-founder of Wells Fargo & Company.
Local councilmen have been invited.
