Campus Community to Raise Funds for Clean Water for Haiti
The Fill My Cup project will raise money by selling handcrafted cups made by DYC students, faculty and staff.
Buffalo, New York – January 31, 2014 – A D’Youville Hunger Initiative sub-committee is working with Water with Blessings out of Louisville, Kentucky, to help provide 20 water filtration systems for distribution in Haiti.
Dr. Martin G. Kelly, assistant professor of biology in the college Math and Natural Sciences Department along with Rev. Jan Mahle, associate campus minister, head the project committee, titled “Fill My Cup."
The group will be selling handcrafted cups made by D’Youville students, staff and faculty at the end of February with proceeds going to help sponsor a group of volunteers to deliver special water filtration systems to 20 Haitian women and train them to use the system. (See schedule below)
“The system, Sawyer PointONE water filtration, is simple, direct, inexpensive and effective ways to provide safe, clean water to people in poor countries," according to Dr. Kelly.
The filtration system removes particles and pathogens larger than .10 microns in diameter, according to the manufacturer Sawyer Products. It attached to a five-gallon bucket and can produce up to 475 gallons of safe, clean water every day.
"This will allow mothers the opportunity to provide safe, clean water for their families," said Dr. Kelly.
‘Water with Blessings’ is “a community of persons who share a passion for bringing safe water to God’s thirsty children,” according to their web site.
D’Youville is the first college in New York State to partner with this organization.
Sawyer Products, based in Florida, is “specifically dedicated to eliminating two of the biggest causes of death in the world: bad water and mosquito bites.”
