School of Nursing Hosts 'Day On Campus'
Buffalo, New York – August 5, 2013 – More than 50 local elementary and high school students visited the D’Youville Campus on Monday, August 5 to see, some for the first time, a college campus, nursing laboratories and classrooms.
The visit was part of the summer activities of Elim Christian Fellowship Day Camp, according to Lauraine Neal, assistant professor in D’Youville’s School of Nursing. She is a long time member of the Fellowship, a non-denominational, multi-cultural, bible based ministry in Buffalo and Rochester who was asked by the Fellowship to introduce the young people to college.
Mary Evanco-Caryk, D’Youville nursing recruiter in the Admissions Office, planned and organized the event.
“There will be children of all ages ranging from elementary to high school students on the excursion,” Neal said. “They are from different schools in the city.”
The children, accompanied by 14 summer camp counselors, toured dormitories, the library, and nursing labs with commentary provided by Caryk.
“We hope to expand the vision of the youth of tomorrow, expose the young people to college life, and instill hope in them and encourage them so they know they can make their dreams come true,” Neal said. “They are excited to be coming.”
The campus tour was followed by a picnic at nearby LaSalle Park.
