TESOL Certificate Course to Launch This Fall

Buffalo, New York – July 16, 2013 – Across New York State and in the City of Buffalo, school children and adult learners whose native language is not English face difficulty learning in English-only classrooms. To address this growing issue, D’Youville will offer an Advanced Certificate program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, known as TESOL, for teachers with a New York State teaching certification starting this fall.

The program is offered through D'Youville's Center for Professional Studies and is open to currently certified teachers. Successful completion will extend a teacher's existing NYS certification to include TESOL and can enhance job security or advancement in a teaching career or business, according to college officials.

“Being able to communicate effectively in English continues to be a skill that is needed throughout the world,” said Catherine Huber, director of D’Youville’s Center for Professional Studies. “There is growing demand for teachers, locally, nationally and internationally, who are specially trained to work with English language learners and bilingual students in the classroom.”

The TESOL certificate provides the training necessary for cohort members to work in schools and businesses that serve increasingly diverse and globally connected populations, according to Huber.

D’Youville’s 18-credit Advanced Certificate program leads to New York State certification and will take two semesters to complete. The program is designed to meet the needs of practicing teachers by offering the courses in a flexible three, five-week modules during each semester on Saturdays.

“The TESOL Advanced Certificate offers cohort members graduate courses for $500 per credit, making the program a cost effective option,” according to Huber.

Another important aspect of D’Youville’s program is the TESOL Advanced Certificate course credits can be transferred into the TESOL master’s degree program if the student desires to pursue the master’s degree following completion of the Advanced Certificate.

The program will be offered at D’Youville’s state-of-the-art classrooms at the Innovation Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo.
