DYC Establishes Early Acceptance Agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

Buffalo, New York – April 1, 2013 – D’Youville College has entered into an agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) that will offer qualified students provisional early acceptance to their School of Dental Medicine or College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The early acceptance agreement will also provide an opportunity for high school seniors to apply for admission to D’Youville and provisional early acceptance to LECOM, according to Dr. Marion Pace Olivieri, chair of Math and Natural Sciences at D'Youville College.

Current D’Youville freshmen and sophomores in biology or chemistry are also eligible for this program.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine has three campuses, with the closest in Erie, Pennsylvania. Other campuses are in Greensburg, Pa. and Bradenton, Florida. It is the largest medical college with more than 2000 students and offers degrees in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy and dental medicine, according to the College.

Osteopathy is a philosophy and form of alternative healthcare, which emphasizes the interrelationship between structure and function of the body, as well as the body’s ability to heal itself.

“It provides all of the benefits of modern medicine including prescription drugs, surgery, and the use of technology to diagnose disease and evaluate injury,” according to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.

“It also offers the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine.”

It was first used in the late 1800s in the U.S.

“At D’Youville we have a history of placing our qualified graduates into a variety of medical and dental programs. This association with LECOM will allow the students to have a position in medical or dental school waiting for them,” said Dr. Olivieri.

“This agreement will allow our participants the time to focus on their studies, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation and service without all of the stresses of multiple medical or dental school applications, additional interviews and the worry that their families may have about their future,” she said.

“The program is already in place and we have students at LECOM,” she added. “Applications are still being accepted for qualified incoming freshmen as well as from our current freshmen and sophomores for this program.”

D’Youville offers healthcare programs in nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, occupational and physical therapy, dietetics and chiropractic.

The West Side college will hold a special information session on April 13 at 10:00 a.m. just before their Spring Open House. Reservations for both events can be made at 716-829-7600 or online at
