DYC Biology Professor Named to Buffalo News Diversity Advisory Board

Buffalo, New York – March 15, 2013 – Martin G. Kelly, Ph.D. assistant professor of biology at D’Youville College, has been selected to be a member of The Buffalo News Diversity Advisory Board for 2013.

The Board provides feedback on the newspaper’s coverage of minorities and meets quarterly or more with News editors and reporters to discuss news coverage and offer ideas. Membership is for one year.

“We think this is one of the most important initiatives The News has undertaken and we are confident your insights and perspectives will prove invaluable,” said Michael K. Connelly, editor and vice president of The News wrote in a letter to Kelly.

Board members will present specific concerns and/or questions regarding how and why the News does what they do. Items can relate to headlines, story content and tone, story placement, photos, diversity within The News or whatever concerns members may have, according to Connelly. “We also welcome your story suggestions…to help insure that we’re not missing anything in the community that we should be covering.”

The 10 person board is made up of individuals from various ethnic and religious groups and organizations and educational institutions and is ‘recycled every year’, according to Rod Watson, the Urban Affairs Editor at The News.

It was created following the “City Grill Shootings” in August 2010, which left four people dead, and four injured. There were concerns about how The News covered the story.

“The previous members of the Advisory Board provided some good and valuable feedback and ideas,” Watson said. “Members also learn what we do and how we do it and we hope they share it with the community.”

Dr. Kelly graduated from the University of Tennessee with his B.A. in Zoology and earned his Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Indiana University. His Ph.D. is from the University of Texas in Austin where his major was Plant Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution. He was a post doctoral research associate in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Kelly is also a mentor with the D'Youville College Upward Bound Program.

The next meeting of the Buffalo News Diversity Advisory Board will be March 21 at the News.
