Physician Assistant Team Takes Top Honors from AFPPA
The Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants honored Bethany Dunn and Maureen Finney with a first place award for research on Herpes Simplex Virus.
Buffalo, New York – August 28, 2014 – Two members of the D’Youville College Physician Assistant (PA) Department earned first place honor awards from the Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants, (AFPPA) a national organization representing PAs.
Drs. Bethany Dunn, assistant professor and Maureen F. Finney, chair and associate professor, received the Graduate Category Award for their poster submission for their graduate student research group study on the prevalence and transmission of Herpes Simplex Virus in suburban Western New York primary care practices.
“This study utilized a survey method to gather information from a sample of adult patients within two suburban primary care practices regarding their knowledge of HSV-2 prevalence, screening, treatment and prevention,” said Dr. Dunn.
“…adults both 40 years of age and older and those under 40 appeared interested in, willing, and likely to be proactive in protecting themselves from HSV-2 and preventing its spread,” she said.
PA graduates, Class of 2013, Cathleen Finan, Andrea M. Mattelian, and Christopher Z. Lickers made up the student team.
Conference poster presentations included five different areas: Empirical Research, Case Report, Practice Improvement, Curricular Innovation Professional Outreach & Advocacy and Medical Mission/Service project.
AFPPA is concerned with practice and professional issues and offers medical education opportunities at various locations nationwide. The professional organizations represent all 50 states.
Dr. Dunn will travel to Phoenix in September to receive the national award at the 2014 AFPPA Fall Continuing Medical Education Conference.
