Blue Cross Blue Shield Creates New Scholarship at DYC

The 4-year scholarship to honor an exceptional incoming freshman in new Health Analytics program

Buffalo, New York – August 14, 2014 – In conjunction with the launch of a new health analytics major at D’Youville College this fall, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, the region’s largest health plan, has made a leadership commitment of a four-year scholarship valued at $10,000 to an incoming freshman in the program.

The “BlueCross BlueShield Health Analytics Scholar” will be a qualified student majoring in the field who “has demonstrated exemplary academic performance, financial need and a personal history that embraces the values of the School of Health Professions at D’Youville College.

The scholarship will fund $2,500 annually for four years of the student’s tuition. The recipient will also earn a paid internship at the health plan in their junior and senior years.

“When D’Youville College came to us with this new program, we immediately asked, 'how can we help?'” said Gretchen Fierle, senior vice president of marketing and communications at BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York. “We are proud to support D’Youville in this program and help these young leaders pursue a career in a field that we actively recruit talent for at our company.”

D’Youville will launch the new major this fall to help meet growing demand for health analysts. The major prepares students in areas relevant to analytics including mathematics and statistical analysis in addition to healthcare/wellness, medical terminology, information technology in healthcare, and broad exposure to the liberal arts through D'Youville's core curriculum.

“We are extremely grateful to BlueCross BlueShield, as a key employer who provided input and insight as we created this new degree track. We also recognize them for seeking talent locally and their investment in the program and our students,” said Dr. Anthony Billittier IV, MD, dean of the School of Health Professions at the college.

Described as “the method of logical analysis” and explained as the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data, health analytics is used to describe, predict, and improve outcomes. Health analysts study large sets of health-related data from a variety of sources and transform it into information that can be very useful. “Health analytics has certainly seen an expanded role in our industry and for us as an insurer,” said Jared Gross, vice president, healthcare economics, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York. “Through the use of analytics we are able to realize more effective ways to support our members and reduce costs without sacrificing quality care.”
