Chiropractic Professor and Interns Provide Care at Boilermaker 15K Road Race

Buffalo, New York – July 16, 2014 – The Boilermaker 15K Road Race has been named the most competitive 15K road race in the world by the Analytical Distance Runner. This annual race, now in its 37th year, takes place in Utica, NY and attracts elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders.

On July 13 and 14, a team of five D'Youville chiropractic interns, and Dr. Maxine Stewart, assistant professor of chiropractic, joined Dr. Russ Ebbets from the Chiropractic Department at the University of Bridgeport, CT to offer chiropractic care at the race which attracts over 17,000 participants.

The group evaluated and treated 297 runners and volunteers for neck, back and extremity complaints; in the many cases where there were no complaints men, women and children received treatment to enhance performance.

The five interns are: Gurdeep Brar, Adrian Ho, Newton Huynh, Danielle Phillips and Navjot Sekhon.

“The interns worked tirelessly for hours at a time with no breaks in between," said Dr. Stewart. "They took the time to properly evaluate each individual, and provided patient-centered care that included recommendations for follow-up at home or through collaborative means."

Sunday’s post-race care brought the added challenge of racers dripping with sweat and anxious to get to the post-race party and beer drinking. Interns and clinicians were astute in recognizing contraindications to care (such as ingestion of alcohol) and in watching for life-threatening situations such as dehydration and heat stroke.

The Boilermaker Road Race is one of the largest 15k road races in North America with over 17,000 participants. Earle C. Reed created the race in 1978, as a way to give back to the community that had supported his family’s business, Utica Boilers (now ECR International). In 1983, renowned distance runner, Bill Rodgers, won the race with a time of 44:38. Rodgers elevated the race by bringing both national exposure and credibility to the event.
