Summit on Student Veteran Success set for May 20-22
Buffalo, New York – May 9, 2014 – D’Youville College will host the Summit on Student Veteran Success on May 20-22 at the Connecticut Street Armory on Buffalo’s West Side and on the DYC campus. The summit will explore the connection between the two major factors contributing to student veteran success: academic support and practical/functional conditions.
The Summit provides academics and practitioners the collaborative opportunity to examine these components of success and how colleges and universities can best support student veterans and veteran departments, according to Summit organizers.
“D’Youville College has built a model for college veterans resource centers based on the understanding that veteran students are a unique population with unique needs,” said Dion Daly, MS, MBA, PhD, assistant professor in D’Youville’s Department of Business and one of the organizers of the event.
“D'Youville has structured its Veterans Affairs Office to help military students feel that they matter to the institution while they are engaged in their educational pursuits as well as after they graduate,” Daly said.
Registration for the Summit on Student Veterans Success will begin at 7:30 a.m. all three days, with speakers starting at 9:30 a.m. on May 20 and 8:30 a.m. on May 21 and May 22. Online registration for the event is available.
Opening remarks will be presented by Kim Wagner,'91 an education officer at the Buffalo Regional VA office and a D’Youville alumna.
Patrick W. Welch, Ph.D., retired Marine and former Director of Veterans Services at Daemen College will be the master of ceremonies.
D'Youville College was ranked first in the nation in 2014 for veteran-friendly schools.
The registration fee for non-veterans is $275 and $215 for veterans and includes sessions and meals.

There will be a lunch at Templeton Landing followed by tours of the USS Littlerock at the Buffalo and Erie County Navel & Military Park on the City's waterfront.
Mike Jurkowski, education liaison representative for the VA Regional Processing Office in Buffalo, will provide School Certifying Official Training for new school certifying officials or as a refresher course on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
An employer panel discussion with representatives of local business organizations regarding veteran student hiring is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22.
