Bishop Malone to Deliver D'Youville's Commencement Address

Buffalo, New York – May 02, 2014 – D’Youville College will graduate approximately 784 students at their 106th commencement on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Kleinhans Music Hall with the ceremony beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Included in the graduation will be D’Youville’s first pharmacy class of 58 students. The college started the program in 2010 and currently has 262 students enrolled.

Most reverend Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

He was named 14th Bishop of Buffalo by Pope Benedict in May 2012. Prior, he was the bishop of Portland, Maine for eight years and continued as apostolic administrator until February 2014.

Bishop Malone is a native of Salem, Massachusetts, graduated from St. John Seminary in Boston and earned his doctorate in theology at Boston University.

Also receiving honorary degrees will be Cheryl A. Klass, senior vice president of operations at the Buffalo General Medical Campus, senior vice president of Kaleida Health, and president of Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and David Zapfel, executive director of Gerard Place, a community based agency on Buffalo’s east side.

Joshua J. Cahill, a School of Pharmacy graduate from Waterloo, N.Y., will deliver the Salutatory Address.

Members of the 50th Anniversary Class of 1964, will attend the ceremony and the invocation will be given by Mary Lake Riley, a member of the Class.

“D’Youville is proud not only of the number of graduates this year, but also their quality and commitment to service,” said Sister Denise A. Roche, GNSH, college president since 1979. “We can expect to have these graduates make significant and transforming accomplishments during their lifetime. They are well prepared to meet the challenges that they will face.”
