Occupational Therapy Professor Named to Miracle League Board
Buffalo, New York – April 23, 2014 – Dr. April C. Rockwood, associate professor of occupational therapy, was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Miracle League of Grand Island and Western New York.
The Miracle League is a charitable organization in Western New York that provides children with mental and physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball on a specially designed field. The turf can accommodate wheelchairs, crutches and walkers. It is a part of the national organization of the Miracle League.
The field was built on land donated by the Grand Island Town Board and volunteers, contractors and professionals donated their talents and time to build the field. “The League funds and conducts adaptive baseball leagues for children with developmental needs,” Rockwood said.
They are currently in the process of designing, raising funds, and planning the construction of an adapted wheelchair accessible playground, with customized rubber surface and special equipment to be located in Veteran’s Park on Grand Island, according to Rockwood.
“A number of my occupational therapy students have assisted with fund-raising by selling 50/50 tickets at Sabres games and Bandits Lacrosse games,” she said. “This also provides the students with opportunities to begin networking with organizations that serve children with special needs.”
D’Youville students can volunteer to become ‘Buddies’ to the children during the baseball season and other events throughout the year.
