DYC Donates Microscopes to West Buffalo Charter School

Buffalo, New York – January 30, 2014 – Third grade students at West Buffalo Charter School will literally look into a new world this Friday through 14 laboratory microscopes just donated to the school by the Biology Department at D’Youville College.

“Our department purchased new microscopes and these were surplus and in great condition. We felt they would be perfect for young school children to introduce them to the fascinating world of biology that comes alive through a microscope,” said Dr. Robert J. Gamble professor of education at D’Youville who arranged for the donation.

In addition, college faculty members have volunteered to work with the third grade students teaching them how to use the instruments and to create lessons that correspond with the 3rd grade curriculum. They will do this Friday afternoons at the West Buffalo Charter School.

Andrea Todoro, Charter School Leader, is ecstatic about the donation and program. “The college was very generous to give us these beautiful microscopes and to have professors come into the class and work with our children. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for them,” she said.

“Because there are 14 instruments, in many cases the children will work in pairs as some of the classes have more than 20 students,” Dr. Gamble said. “This is terrific because it means that children can work cooperatively, learn from one another, and share ideas.”

Nine lessons have been scheduled running from January 31 to April 25th at the school.

D’Youville faculty members Dr. Megan Gervasi, and Jason Den Haese, both assistant professors of biology, will work with the teachers in implementing the microscopes into their science curriculum and will instruct the young students in the operation of the instrument.

West Buffalo Charter School is in its second year on Buffalo’s West Side and has a partnership with D’Youville. Several education classes are taught there and numerous student teachers conduct their placement in grades Kindergarten through third at the school.

The School is located at 113 Lafayette Avenue.

NOTE: THE FIRST MICROSCOPE INSTRUCTION WITH THE THIRD GRADERS IS FRIDAY JAN. 31 AT 1:00 P.M. IN MS. MARKO’S CLASS.
