D’Youville Recent Alumnus is Coauthor of Cancer Research Study
Buffalo, New York – January 17, 2014 – Jordan Vokes, BS '12, who is in his second year as a student at SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine, is coauthor of a cancer research study conducted with several departments at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI).
Results of the study, “Vascular priming enhances chemotherapeutic efficacy against head and neck cancer," appear in Oral Oncology, the official journal of the European Association of Oral Medicine, International Association of Oral Pathologists, and the International Academy of Oral Oncology. Dr. Mukund Seshadri, associate professor of oncology in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at RPCI, is lead author.
Vokes, who majored in biology at D'Youville College, was initiated in cancer research while an undergraduate student through Dr. Silviu L. Faitar, associate professor in the Department of Math & Natural Sciences (MNS) and a former RPCI scientist. Vokes developed his research skills as part of Dr. Faitar’s lab.
As a member of Dr. Faitar's lab, Vokes had his first publication during his senior year.
In 2011, based on his excellent research aptitudes and academic record, Dr. Faitar recommended Vokes for a RPCI Summer Fellowship for undergraduate students. As part of this federally-funded program, Vokes continued his research activity at RPCI, as part of Dr. Seshadri’s team, and during this time he had the chance to contribute to the study recently published in Oral Oncology.
Vokes graduated from D'Youville College in May 2012 with a GPA of 4.0. During his D’Youville years he was awarded The MNS Research Award (2011), The MNS Academic Award (2012), and The Emerging Leaders Award (2012).
He is a graduate of Caledonia-Mumford Central High School in Livingston County.
