DYC Receives AACN Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award
Buffalo, New York – September 23, 2013 – The D’Youville College School of Nursing has been selected as a recipient of the American Association of Colleges (AACN) of Nursing Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award.
The award recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools “to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change.”
DYC Nursing was recognized for its innovative approach to interprofessional education through four-hour simulated patient scenario experiences, in collaboration with seven healthcare professions. More than 254 students and 25 faculty members from the different disciplines participated in the experience.
D’Youville is one of the very few colleges or universities in the nation teaching seven healthcare disciplines under one roof, making it ideal for interprofessional collaboration.
“This award recognizes the dedicated hard work of faculty members from the College’s seven health profession programs who are truly committed to and embrace interprofessional education as the best way to provide holistic healthcare to the community. It is a truly collaborative effort that will serve as a model for the rest of the country,” said Dr. Judith M. Lewis, dean of the School of Nursing.
D’Youville’s School of Nursing was also recognized for showing how teamwork and collaboration affect the safety and quality outcomes for patients.
“Interprofessional education of our future healthcare professionals can take this culture change and teamwork example directly into practice to affect patient care outcomes,” D’Youville’s application read.
The School of Nursing will receive a $1000 award at the Fall Semiannual Meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing on October 28 in Washington.
D’Youville, now in its second century, was founded as the first college for women in Western New York and established the areas first four-year nursing program in the 1940s.
