DYC to Hold 105th Commencement on May 18
Buffalo, New York – April 25, 2013 – Approximately 700 students are candidates to receive degrees this year as D'Youville College holds its 105th commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at Kleinhans Music Hall, 3 Symphony Circle.
An honorary degree will be conferred upon M. Eileen Schmitt, M.D., a 1968 graduate of D'Youville College and a family medicine practitioner in private practice in Wilmington, Delaware.
She received her master’s degree from the University at Buffalo and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Schmitt served as CEO of St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington where she also was president of the medical staff. She was director of St. Clare Medical Outreach and was the medical director of Parkview Nursing Home in that city. She also was a volunteer for medical students and residents.
Dr. Schmitt is the recipient of the 2005 Philanthropist of the Year Award from the Brandywine Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising, the 'Papal Honors, Cross Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifice' 2010 honor, the Monsignor Reese Award from Catholic Charities of Delaware and received an honorary doctorate from Neumann University in Pennsylvania.
The student salutatory address will be delivered by Shelley DeRooy, a doctor of physical therapy graduate. Shelley hails from Lunenberg, Ontario and was recently honored by the Department of Physical Therapy with its Service and Leadership Award. Shelley was also the 2012 recipient of the Dr. J. Warren Perry Health and Human Services Leadership Award and Scholarship.

We know they will make significant and transforming accomplishments during their lifetime and they are well prepared to meet the challenges they will face,” says Sister Denise A. Roche, GNSH, D’Youville president.
The college’s traditional Baccalaureate Interfaith Hooding Ceremony will be held the evening before commencement, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Holy Angels Church, 348 Porter Avenue. Marissa Benzin, Student Association President, will give welcoming remarks.
