DYC Alumna To Deliver Keynote Address at Commencement
Buffalo, New York – March 11, 2013 – D'Youville alumna M. Eileen Schmitt, MD, a general practitioner in Wilmington, DE has been chosen to be the keynote speaker at commencement on May 18. Dr. Schmitt will speak at the 9:00 a.m. ceremony at Kleinhan's Music Hall, 3 Symphony Circle.
A 1968 graduate of D'Youville College, Dr. Schmitt earned her master's degree from the University at Buffalo and her doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Currently, she is in private practice in family medicine in Wilmington, Delaware.
In the course of her long association with health care, she was the director of St. Clare Medical Outreach, CEO of St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington where she continues on the staff and served as president of the Medical Staff.
Dr. Schmitt also served as medical director of Parkview Nursing Home in Wilmington, was the director of the St. Clare Medical Outreach Van for the homeless and uninsured, and was a volunteer teacher for medical students and residents.
She is on the boards of Hope Ministries, Ministry of Caring, Sacred Heart Village, Mother Theresa House where she is board president, St. Francis Hospital, Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia Foundation and the Diocesan Review.
Dr. Schmitt is the recipient of the 2005 Philanthropist of the Year Award from the Brandywine Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising, the 'Papal Honors, Cross Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifice' 2010 honor, the Monsignor Reese Award from Catholic Charities of Delaware and received an honorary doctorate from Neumann University in Pennsylvania.
The student salutatory address will be delivered by Shelley DeRooy, a doctor of physical therapy graduate. Shelley hails from Lunenberg, Ontario and was recently honored by the Department of Physical Therapy with its Service and Leadership Award. Shelley was also the 2012 recipient of the Dr. J. Warren Perry Health and Human Services Leadership Award and Scholarship.
