Crew Posts Program's Best-Ever Results at State Rowing Championships
Whitney Point, NY (5/4/08)-Simply stated, it was the finest showing by D'Youville rowers at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship. D'Youville rowers made their first-ever appearance in a Grand Final, and won their first-ever race at the State Championships.
On day one (May 3), the Varsity Four boat comprised of coxswain Katie Higham (Vestal, NY/Vestal), Erin Bediako (Medway, OH/Tecumseh), Sam Osika (Depew, NY/Depew), Laura Crandall (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton), and Sarah Hanaburgh (Brant Lake, NY/North Warren) finished third in their qualifying heat, and advanced to their fist-ever Grand Final. The Lady Spartans recorded a time 10:04, placing them ahead of the RPI and Sarah Lawrence boats
The Novice Four boat finished fourth in their qualifying heat and did not not advance, but their best race was yet to come
Day two saw the Varsity Four finished fifth in the Grand Final, recording a time of 8:38.7. The Lady Spartans finished ahead of their rival Cazenovia for the first-time this spring by a margin of just 1.3 seconds.
In the Novice Four Petite Race, the D'Youville crew of coxswain Krista Pundt (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Lauren Pundt (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Amy O'Hara (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), Julie Nichols (Lockport, NY/Lockport), and Liz Guillen (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) was victorious over Cazenovia, Albany and St. Lawrence. The Lady Spartans finished the race in 9:00.2, and was a comfortable 24.5 seconds ahead of second-place Cazenovia.
