Women's Basketball

2011-12 Preview

When the 2011-12 Women’s Basketball team opens their season, they will be one of the most athletic teams in the program’s recent history. "Even though we have lost a great deal of experience and size,” said head coach Marisa Gallo, “I believe that this is the most athletic team we have had since I began coaching at DYC 3 years ago.We have not only 11 athletes, but 11 basketball players."

Among the returning players is senior Katie Roland (Victor, NY/Victor), last season’s third best scorer on the team. Roland was eighth in the AMCC in three point percentage (.365), and tied for fourth in three pointers made (50). Roland will be looked at as a leader on and off the court, as she has earned one of the three captain spots. Fellow senior and captain Hannah Norton (Wyoming, NY/Pavilion) will also be returning to the Lady Spartans. She averaged 6.1 rebounds per game last season, with a defensive rebounds average of 4.0 per game. Norton was the fourth best scorer on the team and made 38 of 74 free throws.

Sophomore Megan McGrath (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) averaged 3.4 points per game in just 10 games for the Lady Spartans last season. She had the best field goal percentage on the team, making 15 of her 26 shots. Senior captain Sara Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was fifth in the AMCC in three pointers percentage (.393). She had the second best free throw percentage on the team making 18 out of 26 attempts. Sophomore Cassy Engle (Elba, NY/Elba) returns to the team as last year’s only freshman to see action in all 25 games.

Six freshmen look to see action this season for the Lady Spartans. Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) adds size to the roster and has the ability to make an impact on scoring at the guard position. Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) is a solid point guard. Maria Rosati (West Seneca, NY/St. Mary’s) is athletic and tough for her size and looks to be a defensive spark for her teammates. Jordyn Schenk (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East), Torie Hax (Pulaski, NY/Pulaski), and Kellie Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) will also look to get some minutes on the floor this season.

The Lady Spartans were picked to finish eighth in the AMCC pre-season coaches’ poll. They will open their season against cross-town rival Buffalo State on November 15 at 6 p.m. in the Bengals arena. They will then travel to Oswego State for the Max Ziel Tournament on November 18 and 19.
