Forty Student-Athletes Receive Scholar-Athlete Award from NEAC

Forty D’Youville College student-athletes were recognized by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) as Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09.  To be eligible, a student-athlete has to attain a minimum grade point average of 3.4 for the academic year, and compete in a sport sponsored by the NEAC.

D’Youville College Names Marisa Gallo Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Buffalo, NY (6/29/09)-D’Youville College Director of Athletics Brain Cavanaugh has named Marisa Gallo the Head Coach of women’s basketball effective immediately.

“We are thrilled to have a have someone with proven coaching success, great leadership ability, and Division I playing experience to lead the D’Youville College women’s basketball program into a new era,” said Cavanaugh.

D’Youville begins their first season as members of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in 2009-10.  The Spartans posted a 70-38 overall record the last four seasons, with one NCAA Tournament appearance competing under the North Eastern Athletic Conference banner.

Gallo previously served as the girl’s Head Coach at Starpoint High School for five seasons (2004-2009) and spent two seasons as the Head Coach at Lancaster High School (2002-04).

A recipient of undergraduate and graduate degrees from Canisius College, Gallo appeared in 40 games for the Golden Griffins from 1997-2000. In her senior season, Gallo was named a team captain and honored with team’s Unsung Hero award which goes to the student-athlete who doesn’t receive public recognition for her role and sacrifice to the program.

The new D’Youville coach inherits a women’s basketball program with nine returning letter winners from last season’s squad that compiled a 15-12 overall record.

New Women’s Soccer Coach Named

Buffalo, NY (6/22/09)-D’Youville College Director of Athletics Brain Cavanaugh has named Lew Potter the Head Coach of women’s soccer effective immediately.

Potter has experience coaching at all levels including an extensive collegiate background.  He was the first Director of Soccer Operations and Head men’s and women’s coach at Medaille College from 1997-2001. In 2000 Potter led the Medaille women’s team to the Upstate Athletic Alliance championship while guiding the men’s team to title match that same season.  In 2006 and 2007 Potter worked as an assistant coach with the Buffalo State women’s team.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have a coach with so many established ties to Western New York soccer,” says Cavanaugh. “Our women’s program has made huge strides the last two years and Coach Potter is extremely experienced and will keep us moving forward.”

Potter is currently the Director of Coaching and Tournament Operations at Hamburg Soccer Club and is a head coach with the Empire/Buffalo United Soccer Club.

The new D’Youville coach inherits a program that returns their top four scorers and top goalkeeper from 2008. In 2009 the Spartans begin their first season as members of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and open the campaign Thursday, September 1st with a non-conference match at Oswego State.

Men's & Women's Tennis Added to Athletics Lineup

Buffalo, NY (6/11/09)-D’Youville College will start a women’s tennis team for the fall ’09 semester and a men’s team 2010 spring semester.

Athletic Director Brian Cavanaugh said the women’s team is already scheduled to have 13 matches starting with an away match against Wells College on September 10. He is currently planning the men’s schedule which will start March 2010.

“D’Youville athletics, with the support of Sister Denise Roche, our president, continues to grow and provide more opportunity for student-athletes”, Cavanaugh said. “We look forward to adding tennis for both men and women students; it will bring our total number of teams to 14 and we will be joining the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).”

Dr. Robert Gamble, professor of education at D’Youville and a long time professional tennis director at Camp Robindel on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, has been appointed coach of both teams.

The teams will practice and host both indoor and outdoor matches at the Miller Tennis Center on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be working out and playing at the Center as it is unquestionably the top facility in the area”, Gamble said. “This will give our players the opportunity to play on both clay and hard courts in preparation for a very rigorous season.”

Final NEAC Season Yields Best Finish in President’s Cup Standings

Buffalo, NY (6/3/09)-In the final year of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) membership, D’Youville College recorded their strongest finish in the conference’s President’s Cup final standings

D’Youville garnered 47 out of a possible 87 points (.542), good for fourth-place overall among the nine member schools of the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Points are awarded based on an individual team’s finish in the conference regular-season standings, and bonus points are awarded for placing first or second in the conference tournament.

In the women’s sports final standings, D’Youville posted a second-place finish, recording 35 of a possible 43 points (.814). Volleyball placed second in the regular season and won the conference tournament, softball was second in the regular season and runner-up in the conference tournament, soccer was second in the regular season and cross-country finished third overall.

D’Youville leaves the NEAC to begin play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference this fall.

Two Head Coaches to Step Down 

Buffalo, NY (5/18/09)-Director of Athletics Brian Cavanaugh has announced that effective immediately two of D’Youville College’s most successful coaches, Mark Herr of women’s basketball and Jenny Dannecker of women’s soccer, will be stepping down from their positions to pursue other interests.

During his tenure as the Head Coach of women’s basketball, Mark Herr became not only the program’s win leader, but top career win leader of any women’s sport at D’Youville College. In ten seasons, Herr compiled an overall record of 121-136 (.467), and was an impressive 69-33 (.676) in conference play.

Herr’s teams captured four conference tournament championships (99-00, 00-01, 01-02, 07-08), and two conference regular-season titles (05-06, 07-08). Herr was honored twice as North Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (05-06, 07-08).

In 2007-08, Herr guided D’Youville to their finest season in team history. The Spartans compiled an overall record of 22-6, captured the North Eastern Athletic Conference title, and became the first team from D’Youville to qualify for an NCAA Tournament.

After inheriting a D’Youville women’s soccer program that went 2-61-2 in its first-five seasons, Jenny Dannecker guided the Spartans to 15 wins and one tie over her four seasons as Head Coach and received North Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors after the 2007 campaign.

In the last two seasons, the Spartans were 10-6-1 (.618) in conference play and qualified for the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, advancing as far as the semi-finals in 2007.
