Because public health professionals work in a such a wide variety of settings and collaborate with so many other disciplines, our curriculum will help you develop an in-depth understanding of a wide variety of knowledge. As a student in our program you’ll study epidemiology, biostatistics, public health policy, environmental science, social dynamics, and behavioral health in the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education that emphasizes critical and ethical thinking.

Transfer students can qualify for scholarships, as well. And unlike other schools, maintaining your scholarship is easier at D'Youville because we use a realistic 2.25 GPA requirement to determine your eligibility for merit-based scholarships each year.

As a student in D'Youville's BS in Public Health program you’ll experience a unique interdisciplinary experience designed to give you a competitive edge as you progress with your public health career. If you choose to continue your education by pursuing a graduate degree, our program will provide you with the chemistry, human physiology, and anatomy courses required by many of the top masters and doctoral public health programs.

Digital Storytelling

This course will explore the new frontiers of writing and the range of cultural competencies necessary to fully participate in the global digital future. Students will develop digital and information literacies as well as the foundational elements of strong, clear, precise writing while becoming fluent in emerging communication practices. Students will learn to produce texts in multimedia digital environments, producing new media writing projects such as blogs, wikis, websites, social networking sites, audio, video, and other converged and hybrid media. The course will also focus on helping students to develop critical media literacy skills; students will learn to apply rigorous critical analysis of the media that they consume.

Computers & Electronic Health Records

This is an introduction to the fundamental ideas of computers and their role in society. Students learn of the historical origins of computers, the development of computers since WWII, their uses and impact in society, emerging technologies, and the implementation of computers: operating systems, software applications, the Internet, and an introduction to some elementary programming: e.g., HTML, SQL (Databases and Electronic Health Records), advanced spreadsheet formulas. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are a digital version of the paper charts in the clinician's office. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) focus on the total health of the patient by focusing a broader view of all aspects of a patient's care. This course has a great deal of emphasis on databases including practical hands-on experience using (EMR/EHR) software.

Public health aims to prevent and treat disease and to promote and protect health through strategies that engage the community. This course will examine the history of public health as well as core areas of public health including assessment, assurance and policy development. This course examines the phases of project and management in health care organizations. Students will learn how to use a systems approach to integrate local, state and federal health care mandates and professional standards in setting reasonable goals, determine a time line and budget. They will learn to present the project verbally and in writing using a variety of presentation formats.

Environmental Health

Environmental health examines the impact of the environment on human health. This includes 1) the effect of environmental components, such as pollutants, pathogens, and toxins, on human health, 2) energy resource uses and its effect on human health, 3) food safety, 4) environmental hazards found in the work place, and 5) environmental degradation as it relates to human health and wellbeing. This course will also examine the methods of environmental assessment and the role of public policy related to environmental health.

Introduction to Applied Statistics

This course includes the underlying fundamental mathematical principles and their application to a wide range of statistical methods and tests. Included are the following: sampling, frequency distributions, probability, regression,confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, t-test, analysis of variance, chi-square and correlation. Existent computer software such as MiniTab is utilized by students to aid and facilitate the analysis of results. Not open to those who have taken MAT 120

Intermediate Applied Statistics

This course continues and expands the material present in MAT 123. The course will cover hypothesis testing for variances, symmetric versus asymmetric distributions, non-parametric methods for one, two or multiple samples, measures of association, multifactor analysis of variance, and analysis of covariance. The material focuses on the application of known methods. Large data sets will be employed to explore the methods presented in class. The course will employ one of SPSS, MINITAB or SAS.

Prerequisites: MAT-123 with a minimum grade of C.

The Capstone experience will be designed to integrate, synthesize and apply knowledge as developed throughout the student's academic program. Students will be eligible to complete their capstone in their junior or senior year (senior status will be required for the Thesis option). Capstone Experience

Capstone Experience

At D'Youville, you won’t just learn in the classroom: you'll also have the opportunity to apply what you've learned in a variety of hands-on experiences designed to transform you into a public health professional. 

Internship (3 Credits)

Working in a real public health setting as an intern is a proven way to improve your career prospects. Not only will you be able to gain real-world experience, but you’ll also have the opportunity to network with seasoned public health professionals who can not only provide you with the benefit of their experience, but their professional contacts as well.

As a junior or senior in D'Youville's BS in Public Health program, you'll complete both an Internship in a real-world public health setting as well as an Internship Seminar where you’ll have the opportunity to integrate the experience from your internship with the knowledge you’ve learned from your studies.

And you can be sure we'll be with you every step of the way: D'Youville's faculty and staff will work with you in order to guide you to an internship experience at one of the many local facilities we have relationships with, including:

Study Abroad Experience (3 Credits)

Many public health professionals choose to work outside the United States through a wide variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations. If you’re interested in a career that takes you outside the United States, our Study Abroad experience will help you develop the global perspective and cultural competencies necessary to be successful in the international arena.

Not only will you deepen your knowledge and cultural understanding through semester-long study abroad experiences, but you’ll also have the opportunity to experience first-hand your host country’s public health infrastructure and specific public health challenges through the research you conduct while you develop your final paper on your experience abroad.

Independent Research (3 credits)

If you choose to pursue independent research for your Capstone Experience, you'll have the opportunity to work one-on-one alongside our nationally-known faculty while you collect, analyze, and interpret data in order to develop meaningful applications for public health. Typically, students who decide to pursue independent research follow a three step process:

  • Choose a faculty mentor to guide you
  • Select a research topic relating to your interests
  • Present your results to the D'Youville student body; opportunities also exist to present at regional, national or international conferences

Honors Thesis (6 Credits)

If you plan on going on to graduate school, the Honors Thesis option offers a wonderful opportunity to develop your research and analysis skills while working alongside one of our nationally-recognized faculty for two semesters. Choosing the Honors Thesis option will allow you to hone your research interests and skills while investigating a topic that's meaningful to you and building relationships within the academic community. Students who pursue this option must be honors students with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or better.

If you qualify to pursue this option, you will:

  • Work with a two-member faculty thesis team for 2 continuous semesters
  • Collect primary data or analyze secondary data
  • Defend your thesis to an audience of peers and committee members

5-Year BS + MPH Program

5-Year, BS + MPH Joint Degree Program

An accelerated 5-year, Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Public Health (MPH) joint degree program is available to students seeking advanced, leadership careers in public health, through a partnership between D’Youville and Daemen College.

This joint degree (BS + MPH) program allows you to:

  • Increase your earning potential: According to the Pew Research Center, graduates with a master’s degree typically earn more than their counterparts with only a bachelor’s.
  • Accelerate your education: Traditionally, an MPH degree is earned in 2 to 2.5 years, but through this partnership you will begin earning your MPH credits while still at the bachelor’s level.
  • Expand your connections: Students in this unique program will receive instruction at two, well-respected institutions and work with the professional, student-focused faculty of both colleges.

Program Overview

Students who enroll in this 5-year, accelerated program will receive their Bachelor of Science (BS) in Public Health from D’Youville and their Master of Public Health (MPH) from Daemen College. Each program is fully registered with the New York State Education Department.

Admissions Details

Prospective students may apply to the program through their initial application to D'Youville. Current students enrolled in the BS program in Public Health who are interested in the joint program must apply to the MPH program at Daemen College by April 1 of their junior year.

Admissions requirements for Daemen's MPH program are outlined on Daemen's website and include a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 during their senior year at D’Youville and graduate from D’Youville with a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 in order to remain eligible for the MPH program.

Course Requirements

Under D’Youville and Daemen College’s agreement, Daemen will waive the GRE requirement for the MPH degree. D'Youville students accepted into the MPH program are required to complete a minimum of 12 graduate credit hours and a maximum of 15 graduate credit hours at Daemen College in their senior year. This requirement is necessary in order to ensure students can complete the MPH degree in one year after their graduation from D’Youville.

Graduate-level courses will only be waived by Deamen for the MPH degree if the student earns a B or better in the course. If a student earns earn less than a B, but still no less than a C in the course, the grade and credit will count toward his or her undergraduate degree, but the course will not be waived for the MPH program and the student will be required to retake the course at Daemen.

If the grade earned in the course is less than a C, the student may take the course equivalent (listed in the table below) at D’Youville and the credit will be used to fulfill their undergraduate degree as long as they earn a C or better. As long as the D'Youville student graduates with at least 12 credits of MPH-equivalent courses and earns a B or better in all of those courses and maintains a 3.0 GPA, his or her guaranteed spot at Daemen will be held.

Upon successful completion of the courses at Daemen, the courses will be transferred from Daemen College to D'Youville to fulfill the BS in Public Health degree requirements at D'Youville. As with all transfer acceptance, the student must provide an official transcript.

Daemen will waive a maximum of 15 credits from the MPH degree program for accepted students who complete the Daemen courses; grades of B or better are required for each course to qualify for the waiver. Once enrolled at Daemen, students will be required to take a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours in Daemen's MPH program beyond the waiver courses identified below.

Applicants to the bachelor's degree in Public Health must meet these criteria for admission into the program:

High school rank in the upper one half of the class.

Good Academic Standing

To be in good academic standing in the bachelor's degree in Public Healthstudent must:

Earn minimum grades of C in all courses required for the student's major.
