D’Youville to Restructure Teacher Education Program

Buffalo, New York – November 04, 2016 – D’Youville College has announced the restructuring of its teacher education program as the college updates the curriculum to provide future educators the skills necessary to educate tomorrow’s leaders.

The decision was initiated by faculty in the School of Arts, Sciences & Education, who recognized the need to make D’Youville’s graduate and undergraduate teacher education programs more competitive, relevant and attractive, in order to meet future market needs of the region’s 98 public school districts, which educate more than 160,000 students, as well as Catholic and private schools, which educate tens of thousands more students in the region.

D’Youville will no longer accept students into its graduate and undergraduate teacher education program, effective with the Spring 2017 semester. Once the program has been restructured, students will be invited to apply for admission, most likely in 2020.

No other programs, including D’Youville’s doctoral program in education, are affected by the changes. The eight affected faculty and staff members will be involved in the restructuring.

“This presents a tremendous opportunity for the future,” said Dr. William Mariani, D’Youville’s interim president. “We recognize education is changing, and intend to develop progressive, innovative approaches to teacher education that will be a national model for other colleges and universities who are in the same situation as D’Youville.”

According to Dr. Jason Adsit, Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Education and Director of Educational Leadership, D’Youville will work with each student in the education program to develop an individualized action plan for completing their degree and certification requirements.

In addition, the college is developing articulation agreements with local institutions that will allow D’Youville students to continue their graduate education by enrolling at those schools.

“Students currently enrolled in the undergraduate Liberal Studies for Education program will also receive individualized action plans that will allow them to complete their undergraduate degree at D’Youville and their graduate degree and initial teacher certification at another institution,” Adsit said.

“The students will be treated individually and offered options to insure they can complete their teacher education degree. The same rules, cost, and plans that accompany our undergraduate program will be negotiated with other local institutions to ensure that the impact on these students is minimal.”

“We have already begun to reach out to our education alumni who are willing to serve in an advisory capacity as we begin the restructuring process,” Mariani said. “We will also be consulting with area school superintendents and expert educators as we work to revitalize our teacher education program.”

“Our end goal is to reposition our teacher education program to be more competitive and attractive in the future,” Adsit said.

D’Youville, founded by the Grey Nuns and chartered in 1908, was the first college for women in Western New York and became co-educational in 1971.

Q&A Regarding DYC Education Department 

Q: Why has D’Youville College decided to restructure its teacher education programs?

A: The decision was initiated by faculty in the School of Arts, Sciences & Education, who recognized the need to make D’Youville’s graduate and undergraduate teacher education programs more competitive, relevant and attractive, in order to meet future market needs.

Q: When will this transition begin?

A: The Teacher Certification Programs at D’Youville College will not be accepting new students as of spring 2017.

Q: What programs does this change affect?

A: This impacts all Teacher Certification Programs at D’Youville. These include: M.S. Childhood Education, M.S. Special Education, and M.S. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The undergraduate program, Liberal Studies for Education will also be affected.

This does not affect the doctoral program in Educational Leadership.

Q: What is the status of the Liberal Studies (Education) program?

A: The Liberal Studies in Education program will not accept any new students beginning in Spring 2017. As the currently-enrolled undergraduate students complete the program, they will be transitioned to education programs at local partner institutions to complete their M.S. and student teaching. D’Youville College will guide the transition process for each student in the Liberal Studies for Education major as they progress through their undergraduate program.

Q: How will this change affect current graduate students?

A: Each current graduate student will be provided with an individualized transition plan that will ensure timely completion of their graduate degree and state certification at partner institutions.

Q: Will tuition cost more if I go to a partner institution?

A: No. D’Youville College is working with local peer institutions to ensure that students do not incur additional tuition costs. This also includes any scholarship awards the student may have.

Q: Will my classes and credits be transferred if I go to a partner institution?

A: Yes. D’Youville College is working on articulation agreements with local peer institutions that will ensure that all credits students have earned at D’Youville are accepted at the new institution.

Q: I’m supposed to student teach in fall 2017. What’s going to happen to me?

A: You will be able to student teach in fall 2017 but that experience may be coordinated at a new institution. The College is working with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and its accrediting agencies to determine the requisite course of action for all graduate students who will be enrolled beyond May 2017.

Q: Will this affect my state certification?

A: No. D’Youville College is working with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to ensure that this transition does not affect your state certification.

Q: From where will my degree be conferred if I am a current education student?

A: All undergraduate students in the Liberal Studies for Education program will receive their B.A. from D’Youville College.

Graduate students who are scheduled to complete their student teaching assignments in Spring 2017 will receive their degree from D’Youville College.

The “institution of record” for all other graduate students will be determined in partnership with NYSED, the accrediting agencies, and other local institutions.

Q: What is the future for Education Department programs?

A: The teacher certification and undergraduate Education programs at D’Youville College will be restructured. A team of faculty and staff are working to build new, contemporary programs, designed to better meet the needs of today’s education market. This will involve working with local stakeholders to design new programs and studying best practices in teacher education to create cutting edge and market-driven opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers.

A: New programs in teacher education should be available in fall of 2020.
