I worked with faculty to create an exercise program for senior citizens that we implemented at several area community centers.
I am from Janesville, Wisconsin, and am one of five children. My family moved from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin when I was young. I was actually enrolled in a Wisconsin state university and had already received housing assignments before I heard from D’Youville. The personal attention, financial aid and small campus atmosphere at DYC are things that could not be matched by other schools! Also, my middle name is Marguerite, my grandmother thought I was destined to attend a school named for Marguerite d’Youville.
I enrolled as a dietetics student, but a second knee surgery after my freshman year sparked a change in my major. I witnessed just how helpful a physical therapist could be in the rehabilitation process. After graduation, I plan on finding full-time employment as a physical therapist closer to my family. I would love to work with children, but am open to exploring all of my career options.
Through the Exercise and Sports Studies (ESS) curriculum, I did an internship at a local, privately-owned physical therapy clinic, volunteering approximately 225 hours. It helped me learn patient and professional practice skills. During my undergraduate education, I was also able to help Dr. Lynn Rivers, chair of the Physical Therapy Department, with a personal exercise program for seniors that was performed at multiple Buffalo senior citizen centers. Marguerite d’Youville was dedicated to a life of community service, and the college is continuing that mission.
