Motivational Interviewing: Applications in Mental Health is presented by Dr. Teresa Donegan on Monday, August 27, 2018.
This introductory session will cover the overall principles and skills of motivational interviewing.
At the end of the event, attendees will be able to describe what motivational interviewing (MI) is and isn’t, practice MI skills and techniques, differentiate MI from other forms of counseling, identify barriers to change, and see how MI can be incorporated into daily interactions with clients/patients.

Dr. Donegan joined D’Youville College as an assistant professor in the School of Pharmacy in January 2010. She received a Master’s and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Duquesne University and primarily teaches the “human dimensions of patient care” as well as health prevention and promotion. She has developed expertise in Motivational Interviewing which is a [person] patient-centered counseling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change. She started teaching Motivational Interviewing to pharmacy students at the University of Pittsburgh and has extended to her work to students in the dietetics, chiropractic, physical therapy, and nursing programs. She started consulting with Health Care organizations in 2011 at Catholic Medical Partners and HealthNow (BCBS) as well as Jericho Road. She has trained over 1,200 health care providers including pharmacists, nurse care coordinators, dietitians, social workers, case managers, health coaches and behavioral health consultants. Outside of teaching she was a clinical research coordinator at Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh PA and a research associate at St. Francis Medical Center. She assessed patient and employee satisfaction. She has led efforts to enhance wellness (mind, body, and spirit) at D’Youville College through her role as Chair, of the Wellness Committee and through speaking engagements. She was selected by the President of D’Youville to attend the inaugural Women’s Leadership Institute and is now Chair, of the Steering Committee.
