I chose occupational therapy as a major because I wanted to work with seniors to improve their daily lives allowing them to live independently for a longer period. I came to D'Youville to start a second career after many years of teaching. I chose DYC because of the generous benefits that the college provides to veterans and the great atmosphere on campus.
The most rewarding aspect of the OT program is the field work opportunities. I really enjoy getting out of the classroom and seeing things that we have studied being put into practice by therapists. The occupational therapy faculty are very helpful and truly want you to succeed. I have a lot of respect for the OT faculty and believe that they epitomize what an occupational therapist should be.
The veteran community at D’Youville is much like a family and when you have this much support it is hard not to succeed. I will never forget my first day on campus when Mr. Ben Randle, the director of the Office of Veterans Affairs at D'Youville took time out to personally give me a tour of the campus. I think the best benefit of attending D’Youville is the guidance from the Veteran’s Affairs directors, Ben Randle and Ed Draper.
My advice for student veterans would be to take advantage of the many services that the college provides to us. It’s very important to start your academic career strong; you only get back what you put into your education.
Expects to graduate in 2015
