I know my professors as individuals, rather than just lecturers.
I'm a pre-med student at D'Youville College, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry and physics. I chose to study biology because of my interest in the human body. Biology is one of the most exciting subjects because one is capable of learning all of the underworkings of his/her own body. To me there's nothing more interesting than being able to explain every detail of the human body.
I chose D'Youville because of its small size. At DYC I've been able to interact with my professors and other students in a smaller class environment allowing for more personalized help in my studies. I've personally interacted with almost all faculty in the math and natural sciences department. I know my professors as individuals, rather than just lecturers. It's important to me to know my professors as well as have smaller class sizes in order to be able to be more than just a number.
At D'Youville I've taken several courses in directed studies (independent study) in which I was able to create a class one-on-one with a professor and study the things that interest me most. For example, I took Latin and Roman History 4 with Dr. Painter and Modern Physics with Dr. DeHaven so far. I definitely plan to take more directed studies courses.
I'm graduating from D'Youville in 2014 and I've already been accepted into medical school through an early assurance program with a guaranteed spot. I am now preparing to apply to a joint MD/PhD program to study biophysics and medicine.
