The Education program at D’Youville provides opportunities for preparation in numerous careers including: education administration, coaching, consultation in the public and private sector, research positions, and advanced degrees in various fields.
Observation and Fieldwork in Education
Although no formal internships are required, candidates for teacher certification must complete 100 hours of classroom observation in addition to student teaching. Special education majors complete 50 additional hours of observation. Our department will help guide you to fulfill these important requirements for teaching certification. The faculty has also designed focused assignments that include fieldwork as an essential component.
Education Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program will be prepared to teach in the level of their teaching certification. Whether at the childhood or adolescence level, graduates will apply for teaching certification in New York State, which has reciprocal agreements with 30 other states more than 30 other states and jurisdictions.
Graduates can also apply an education degree towards other certifications or apply their coursework to become certified as school principals, department heads, superintendents, and other administrative positions. The Master of Education degree also opens opportunities for further advanced degrees such as an EdD or PhD. Many students enter doctoral programs in educational leadership, higher education, educational administration or other specialties.
