Doctoral Programs
The doctoral programs at D'Youville are designed to give health and education professionals a competitive edge through challenging course work and relevant work experience.
Programs For Working Professionals
These part-time programs are offered to individuals with previously earned graduate degrees in a health related profession, health care management, education, or a closely related field. Program concentrations include:
- Health Policy - for those interested in management and leadership in health care
- Health Education - for those interested in college teaching or institutional education in health fields
- Education Leadership - for those interested in K-12 or higher education leadership
Emphasis on Problem Solving
As a core to both the health and education programs, students receive preparation in research and analysis, organizational behavior, communications, law and policy, and finance. With an Ed.D from D’Youville, students will be equipped to meet the increasing demand among pre and post-secondary education, healthcare and government institutions for doctoral-level professionals who can provide leadership in policy formation, problem solving and teaching.
The real core of the program is developing critical thinking and problem solving skills. What makes this degree unique is that it focuses on applied research: when students look at a problem and research a problem, they take into consideration what the applications of their research will be.
Key Requirements
The curriculum involves 45 hours of advanced graduate work beyond the professional master's degree in a health or education-related field. It is comprised of 13 courses including dissertation research, writing and defense. Because the program is designed specifically for working adult practitioners, courses are offered during the evening and weekend in the fall, spring and summer semesters.
Unique Features
A unique feature of the program are the field courses studying organizational relationships, where students, along with a field mentor, study and propose solutions to real-world problems related to their profession and area of study. These mentors are also available for research, proposal preparation and dissertation preparation to ensure continuity between academic and applied learning. Because our programs are aimed at serving working professionals, we do not have any residency requirements.
Each program relies on a cohort model. Cohorts are groups of students who work together, typically about 5 to 10 students. The students get to know each other, work together and go through the program together. In the course of their study, students form professional bonds as a result of having a common educational experience. Since the students come from different backgrounds, they have different experiences to share, providing for a good interaction and a constructive blend of personalities.
