Program Director
Charlotte Baumgart, PhD, RD, CDN — Department Chair
Charlotte Baumgart received her B.S. in Dietetics from Cornell University, her
M.S. in Nutrition from The Pennsylvania State University, and her Ph.D. in Science
Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Baumgart came
to D’Youville College in 1992 with more than 10 years of clinical experience
as a Registered Dietitian. She is a former President of the Western New York
Dietetic Association. Dr. Baumgart's research interests include evidence-based
clinical practice, computerized instruction, and herbals.
Department Faculty
Leah Caruso, MS, RD, CDN — Clinical Instructor
Leah Caruso received her B.S. in Dietetics from State University New York College at Buffalo and her M.S. in Nutrition from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Ms. Caruso has been employed as a Registered Dietitian since 1990 at a large teaching hospital. Her expertise is in renal nutrition. Ms. Caruso joined the clinical faculty in 2005.
Maria
Haas, MS, RD, CDN — Instructor
Maria Haas received her B.S. in Dietetics from Mercyhurst College, her M.S. in
Nutrition/Management from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and is
currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Counseling and Educational Psychology at the
State University of New York at Buffalo. Ms. Haas came to D’Youville College
in 2000 with extensive (16 years) experience as a Registered Dietitian, including
several positions as Clinical Manager. She has been active in the Western New
York Dietetic Association since 1983, including holding the office of President
twice. She is also active in the Council of Food Service Associations. She received
the New York State Recognized Young Dietitian Award in 1993 and the Silver Medal
Award for the Western New York Dietetic Association in 1998. Ms. Haas is the Faculty Advisor for the Student Dietetics Association.
Cheryl Strub, RD, CDN — Clinical Instructor
Cheryl Strub received her B.S. in Dietetics from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Ms. Strub has been employed as a Registered Dietitian since 1989. She has extensive experience in acute and long term care, including cardiac rehabilitation, renal failure, and diabetes education. Ms. Strub joined the clinical faculty in 2005.
Edward
H. Weiss, PhD, RD — Associate Professor
Edward H. Weiss, a Registered Dietitian since 1981, has research and professional
practice experiences in dietetics education, senior nutrition services, worksite
wellness, medical nutrition education, hunger, and food science. He has served
on the Board of Directors, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County and Meals
on Wheels of Buffalo & Erie Co. Dr. Weiss has also served on the Editorial
Board for the Journal of Nutrition Education and as a reviewer for The Journal
of the American Dietetic Assoc., Health Education Research and Wadsworth Publishing
Co. He has authored over 35 articles, abstracts, text chapters, and text reviews.
His awards have included: Metropolitan Life Foundation Award in Nutrition, 1981;
and the New York Dietetic Association's award for "Outstanding Dietetic
Educator for the Coordinated Program," 2002. Dr. Weiss received his B.S.
in Biology from Gettysburg College in 1973, his M.A. in Science Teaching from
Duke University and his Ph.D. in Science Education (Nutrition Education) from
The Pennsylvania State University.
Megan Whelan, MS, RD, CNSD — Clinical Instructor, Clinical Coordinator
Megan Whelan received her B.S. in Human Nutrition from the University of Massachusetts and her M.S. in Nutrition from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She also is a Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian (CNSD). Ms. Whelan has experience as a clinical dietitian, critical care dietitian (in a level 1 trauma center), and as a clinical nutrition manager. Ms. Whelan joined the clinical faculty in 2005.
