Durham's Baby Cafe logo

Rev. Diann Holt and Augusta Rochebrun of the Baby Café guest lectured in Health Services Management and Public Health courses and have hosted a group of middle school students participating in D’Youville’s first Public Health camp in Summer 2019. Students learned about the role of supportive spaces for women and their families to gather both prenatally and postnatally for support with pregnancy, parenting, and breastfeeding.

Kathy Border EdD, assistant professor of Dietetics serves on the districts Nutrition Committee. Border promotes mandated changes in school meals as a result of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.

Students in the dietetics program travel to local BPS classrooms to educate fourth grade students on basic nutrition and the food system to encourage life-long healthy eating.

To date, we have reached:

2016: 39 classrooms = 800 students
2017: 30 classrooms =750 students
2018: 23 classrooms = 607 students

Buffalo Urban League

Buffalo Urban League

In her role as Co-Chair of the Community Health Worker Network, Dr. Cadzow has partnered with the Buffalo Urban League and Community Partners of WNY PPS to develop and evaluate a Community Health Worker program that addresses patient no-show rates and facilitates access to timely healthcare among prenatal and postnatal women as well as well visits, immunization, and lead screening for children and chronic disease management for adults.

Working with Catholic Charities WIC on a NIH grant-funded project in partnership with Roswell Park Comprehensive Care Center, Dr. Cadzow, PhD has aimed to increase the rates of breastfeeding intent and initiation among African American women. Catholic Charities WIC assisted with recruitment of pregnant women to participate in this social media intervention study.

ECMC

As part of the Haiti Rehab Project in October 2017, ECMC’S Department of Rehabilitation Medicine hosted D’Youville and the two Haitian rehabilitation clinicians,Cedieu Fortilus and WilfridMacena, at School 84 on theECMC Health Campus.ECMC allowed them to observe while instructing them on physical and occupational therapy rehabilitation practices for patients who have brain injury, amputations, stroke, and other injuries/illnesses.

Friends of the Night People

 

Friends of the Night logo

Friends of the Night is a local agency whose mission is to provide food and necessities to address the effects and impact of poverty. For over a decade, D’Youville has been sending volunteers on the second Wednesday of each month during the academic year to Friends of Night People. In addition to helping with the meal service, and the clothing distribution, D’Youville students have made hundreds of PB & J sandwiches that have been distributed in addition to the meal.

Partnership for the Public Good

Dr. Cadzow has partnered with the Community Health Worker Network and the Partnership for the Public Good to produce a white paper on School Health and Wellness using the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model along with the Buffalo Public Schools Youth Risk Behavior Survey data. She has worked with them to explore academic-community partnerships; participating in meetings and round table discussions with community organizations and other academic institutions to brainstorm best practices for regional collaborations.

Ujima Theatre was a critical partner in a project funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, titled Unheard Voices. This project, in partnership with D’Youville’s Health Administration and Public Health Department, the Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo, the New Hotness, and the Buffalo Public Schools, aimed to elicit stories from parents and students within the Buffalo Public Schools related to equity and inclusion and particularly related to health and wellness. Stories were packaged into three performances to increase awareness of parent and student perspectives among key decision makers.

Dr. Cadzow has worked with them in relationship to the WNY Girls in Sports project that is Women’s Sports Foundation funding disseminated to several regional community organizations.

Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network

Dr. Cadzow formerly served as a board member and the chair of the program committee for the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network and assisted during a major strategic planning phase. In her role as Board Co-chair of the Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo, she has served as a trainer to many of BPPN’s Community Health Workers. BPPN staff have guest lectured in several Health Services Management courses and have provided a site for student internships.

Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo

Dr. Cadzow is the Board Co-Chair of the CHWNB and has served as a trainer and evaluator for the organization. The CHWNB partnered on a major grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, titled the School Health and Wellness Collaborative, that received over 150,000 for two years of work on school wellness. This involved training parents and students as Community Health Workers and supporting their engagement on school wellness teams. The work continues as a part of the CHWNB. Several students have participated as interns, volunteers, or work study on this project. Two students used this work to inform their Master’s Theses. The College is currently finalizing an MOU with the CHWNB to house the 4-day Community Health Worker core competency training under D’Youville.

Students in the dietetics program are trained by professionals on lesson plan implementation, promoting the Farm to School (F2S) program and educating the public through their Healthy Corner Store Initiative (HCSI) . Students worked with the HCSI at convenience stores throughout Buffalo, providing nutrition information to adults.

Dr. Cadzow previously served on the board of Erie Niagara AHEC and as the Evaluation Director for the NYS AHEC System. Currently, Dr. Lauren Clay serves as a board member and has spearheaded the articulation of a relationship between the AHEC Scholars program and the Public Health program. Most recently, EN AHEC partnered with D’Youville Department of Health Administration and Public Health to deliver the inaugural Public Health camp for middle school students.

Students in DTC 521 SP work with nutrition services at Holy Cross Head Start. Their rotation involves obtaining anthropometrics of at risk pre-schoolers, presenting a nutrition lesson, and participating in the family style meal service.

Students in Health Services Management and Public Health have benefited from guest lectures from staff at the International Institute as well as opportunities to intern with them. Additionally, Dr. Cadzow partnered with them to translate a children’s book she co-wrote Sofia Learns about Research. Staff of the II translated it into Arabic and Spanish.

The Executive Director of the Population Health Collaborative, John Craik,  is an adjunct instructor for the Health Administration doctoral program. The organization has supported the planning of the Health Professions Hub through the use of their data warehouse (Keys to Health). Several D’Youville faculty attend regular meetings with the organization to plan for collaborative regional health behavior change initiatives.

United Way

Dr. Cadzow has participated on the Healthy Start Healthy Future for All Coalition at the United Way for over 7 years, nearly since its inception. She assisted with the revision of a pediatric practice guidelines tool, Ounce of Prevention, to provide a higher level of support and guidance for breastfeeding at the pediatrician’s office. She also helped to develop a toolkit, Healthy You x2, that provides prenatal guidance supportive of breastfeeding. The Center for Research on Physical Activity, Sport & Health (CRPASH) is an external evaluator for programs like CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) and GOBuffaloMom.

NY Beef Council

New York State Beef Council logo

Students in the Dietetics program are given a tour of a family run beef farm each year. They’re educated on the local food system how the cattle are bred and ethically raised. Students participate in a nutrition lesson on beef nutrition.

Several students are selected each year to participate in the Dietetic Intern Summit a two-day training program focused on beef nutrition, food preparation and media skills.

Lending a Hand (Puerto Rico)

With the help of various agencies, Lending A Hand offers students, faculty and staff the opportunity to travel to areas affected by natural disasters. This past December, a group worked in San Juan, Puerto Rico to help rebuild three different homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Maria.

The Haiti Rehab Project helps improve the lives of those physically disabled in Haiti, using local resources to aid in artificial limbs. Dr. Sarah Pictor, a clinical associate professor of Physical Therapy, is partnered with Ginger Oliver and The Community Rehab Project. This ongoing partnership allows representatives from Haiti to travel to D'Youville to acquire essential healthcare skills to bring back to Haiti to implement and pass on to others.
